Bob Kuehl, co-head coach of Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer/Southwest Christian, summed up his team’s Class 1A quarterfinal pretty well.

“When’s the last time you had 73 shots on goal,’’ he said, “and you were still worried about the outcome?”

The White Hawks peppered Mankato East/Loyola goaltender Andrea Schreiber with 73 shots, with four of them finding the net in a 4-2 victory Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center to remain undefeated with a 23-0-5 record. Schreiber, a senior, made a record-breaking 69 saves.

Schreiber said afterward she knew she could handle the task of so many shots.

“I tried my hardest to keep it a low-scoring game because I knew that’s what we needed to potentially win,” Schreiber said.

The No. 3-seeded White Hawks took a 3-0 lead through two periods with goals from senior Laruen Burris, freshman Kailey Niccum and eighth-grader Gretta Pioske before the Cougars came back to get within one with 8:48 left in the game.

First report

The No. 3-seeded White Hawks (23-0-5) used a 3-0 lead to hang on to momentum Wednesday in the Class 1A quarterfinals at Xcel Energy Center. Their 73 shots were the most by one team in a regulation game since Blake had 60 shots on goal against Luverne in 2016.

Lauren Burris scored her 25th goal of the season 5 minutes, 44 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Kailey Niccum and Gretta Pioske added tallies in the second period, both tipping point shots in front. Sydney Hules added a late power-play goal in the final minute of regulation after the Cougars (18-8-2) had narrowed the margin to 3-2.

Senior Madison Davis got the Cougars' first goal with 12:34 to play in the third period with her 36th of the season on a fanned clearing attempt by the defense in the slot. A little more than four minutes later, sophomore Evey Johnson scored on a backhander on a rebound to make it a 3-2 game.

Mankato East senior goaltender Andrea Schreiber made 69 saves.

Taylor Smith stopped 16 shots for the White Hawks, whose program full name is Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer/SW Christian.
