First report

There were ups and downs, but Robbinsdale Cooper, the defending Class 3A state champion, earned its first win of the 2018-19 season.

Cooper led by as much as 19 and then held on for a 63-58 home-opening victory over No. 3-3A DeLaSalle Friday in Robbinsdale. Arthel Massaquoi had 18 points to lead a quartet of Hawks scorers in double figures.

Cooper led by 13 with less than three minutes to play, but DeLaSalle surged back, reducing the lead to 61-58 after Alexis Cochran-Starr drained her fifth 3-pointer with 27.6 seconds left. Cochran-Starr finished with 15 points.

The Hawks (1-2), who led 30-24 at halftime, managed to overcome some missed free throws by nabbing offensive rebounds and Jayla Reliford made two at the line to seal the game for Cooper.

Reliford scored 13 for Cooper, including three 3-pointers. Aja Wheeler had 12 points and Kierra Wheeler added 11.

The Islanders (1-3) were led by 15 points each by Elaina Jones and Cochran-Starr. Nurjei Weems added 11 points.
