Roseau junior Kacie Borowicz scored a season-high 40 points to lead the Rams to victory Friday and put them just one win from back-to-back Class 2A championships.

The No. 3-ranked Rams (25-5) defeated No. 2-ranked Maranatha Christian Academy 78-66 at Target Center.

“You could just feel that she was going to have a big game today,” Roseau coach Kelsey Didrikson said of Borowicz, who scored just 15 points in the quarterfinal. “Wednesday’s game wasn’t going to define her tournament.”

First report

Roseau Junior Kacie Borowicz scored a season-high 40 points to lead the Rams to a 78-66 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy in the Class 2A semifinals Friday at Target Center.

Roseau now just needs one more victory to earn back-to-back Class 2A championships.

The Rams held a seven-point lead with 4:59 to play in the first half when a fast-break layup from Kacie Borowicz bumped the score to 31-24. But the Rams failed to score another field goal until the half. They also turned the ball over five times in that stretch and missed a few of their own shots along the way.

To take advantage, the Mustangs used a 14-2 run to go up 38-33 at the break. Jaclyn Jarnot made a free throw with 10.5 seconds left in the half for her 20th point of the game. She finished the game with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

It was a bit of a slow start to the second half, but the Mustangs capitalized at the free throw line. Their first six points of the half came at the line, and they didn’t hit a field goal until the second half was 7 minutes, 15 seconds old. Senior Kylie Post made a three-pointer out of the media timeout for a 47-39 lead.

The Rams also went 4:31 without a field goal to start the second half before a bucket in the paint from senior McKayla Christianson. They took the lead back with 6:45 to play on a three-pointer from Kacie Borowicz. Her sister, Katie, a ninth-grader, had 20 points.

The Mustangs were making their first bid for a Class 2A title after after moving up a class. They had made eight consecutive trips to state in the Class 1A tournament. They finished fourth in Class 1A last year and won titles in 2011 and 2012.
