Mustangs shut down Vikings with zone defense

The Mustangs (21-9) made it back-to-back wins for the unranked squads, using a balanced attack to knock off the No. 4-ranked, Ashlynn Muhl-led Vikings.

“Our zone defense in the last 10 minutes was the difference,” Maranatha coach Jim Hammond said. “We’re not a zone team but had to play it because we were in foul trouble.”

Mustangs sophomore center Onye Osemenam fouled out trying to keep Muhl in check. The senior Minneota forward finished with 33 points and 23 rebounds.

However, Muhl’s supporting cast combined to go 4-for-40 from the floor. The Vikings (25-2) were 0-for-20 from three-point range.

Junior guard Alexis Long paced the Mustangs’ balanced attack with 12 points. Five Maranatha players scored at least seven points.

“We’re really a team,” Long said. “Everybody contributes.”
