Huskies come close but lose at the last second

In a quarterfinal thriller, No. 5 Minnehaha Academy moved one step closer to a shot at defending its Class 2A title, barely escaping with a victory over No. 9 Jackson County Central.

Down 44-27 midway through the second half, Jackson County Central came roaring back to take a 59-58 lead with 33 seconds remaining on point guard Leslie Handzus’ three-pointer.

The Huskies’ fans erupted, and Jackson County Central appeared poised to win.

But with 15 seconds remaining, Minnehaha center Katelyn Adams grabbed her 16th rebound of the night off a miss by teammate Gabbi Stienstra and then scored the winning basket.

“I preferred last year’s style with winning by double figures all the time, but that’s not going to be the way it is this year, and we’re just happy to get out of there with a W,” Redhawks coach Josh Thurow said.

Adams finished with 18 points to lead the Redhawks.
