A glance at tonight's section finals in Class 3A:

Section 1: New Prague (20-8) vs. Red Wing (17-9), Rochester Civic Center—New Prague swept the season series, and is looking to advance to state for the fifth time in the past six years. Red Wing hasn’t made the state tournament since 2005, but is hoping the third time’s the charm in this matchup. Trojans forward Anna Rynda has been a consistent leader in section play, scoring 22 points in both games. Wingers guard Tesha Buck has also played well, averaging 20 points per game since serving her two-game suspension for an altercation with Rynda the last time these teams met.

Section 3: DeLaSalle (23-4) vs. Park Center (10-17), Anoka High School—DeLaSalle will be a prohibitive favorite in this matchup, as the Islanders seek their fifth trip to state in the last six years. If the Islanders can get past the Pirates, it will be the third consecutive trip for sophomores TySeanna Johnson (17.7 ppg) and Allina Starr (15 ppg), who made the trip in 2009 as members of Minneapolis North’s runner-up squad, and last season with the Islanders, who were 31-1 and earned a third-place finish.

Section 5: Monticello (14-14) vs. Rogers (14-14), Buffalo High School—This one promises to be good. Not only do the Magic and Royals have identical records, but they split their season series with the visitor winning both games. As recently as two years ago, the Magic were at a low point with their program, winning just two games combined during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. But after fighting through some tough seasons, the team is on the verge of the school’s first trip to the state tournament.

“I think for our girls program, we told the coach that help was on the way. Our youth program is strong and we knew that the wins were going to come, but we’re excited that they came this quickly,” Monticello athletic director Gary Revenig said. “In section play, we’ve raised our play to another level, and the future looks great.”

Section 8: Alexandria (23-3) vs. Fergus Falls (23-3), St. John’s University—Again, teams with identical records square off in a section championship. The Otters are the higher seed and won both matchups this season by a combined 12 points. The Cardinals hope to follow in the footsteps of their boys' hockey team and advance to state, where they haven’t been since they made four consecutive trips from 1999-2002 (they were state champions in 1997). Both teams were double-digit winners in their two section victories.
