Long-time Woodbury girls’ basketball coach Dave Preller announced that he is retiring after this season.

Preller has been the Royals head coach for the past 24 years. He started his career as an assistant at Woodbury before leaving to coach two seasons at Park of Cottage Grove.

“It’s time,” Preller said in a press release. “I’ve been fortunate and owe a lot to District 833, the Woodbury community, and my family. There is absolutely no way I could have enjoyed this career without an incredible wife and family.”

Preller will guide the No. 2 seed Royals into the Class 4A, Section 4 playoffs this week. During his career, Preller has posted a 531-142 record, won 16 conference and 10 section championships and the 2003 Class 4A state title. He was elected into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002.

Preller has taught for 34 years in District 833, 32 years of those years at Woodbury High School in the Business Education Department.
