2,000 and 1,000 point benchmarks reached in same game.

The final score was a lopsided one, but there were a number of storylines to Cook’s 76-29 victory over Cotton in St. Louis County conference action on Thursday.

Senior guard Emily Youngstrom, a fifth-year varsity player, surpassed 2,000 points for her career early in the game. Emily finished with 21 points, just a shade under her season average.

Not to be outdone by her older sister, freshman guard Darby Youngstrom reached a milestone of her own later in the game, going over 1,000 points for her career on her way to a triple-double (21 points, 10 assists, 10 steals).

It was quite a feat for the sisters to accomplish in their last regular season game together. The two have been teammates on varsity since Darby joined the team in seventh grade, and they led Cook to a 19-3 record this season.

“It was just really great to see both of them reach such a milestone,” Cook coach Ashlee Strandberg said. “They both have just worked so hard, and to see them happy and excited for each other really made the night.”

Strandberg has been working with the sisters since before their days as Little Gophers and describes them as a pretty special duo.

“It’s amazing to see them play together. It’s like they sometimes share one brain. It’s just an incredible dynamic,” she said. “There’s that sister bond, but they really do a nice job of getting everyone involved.”

The Little Gophers will continue their season with the class 1A, section 7 playoffs, which are set to begin Tuesday.
