The standings at the top of the Missota Conference are as close as it gets.

Chanhassen (16-8), Farmington (21-3), New Prague (18-7) and Shakopee (20-5) are in a four-way tie for first place at 10-3, with each team set to play its final regular season game on Friday night.

Chanhassen will travel to play No. 10, 3A Red Wing (15-8, 6-7), a team the Storm beat 65-63 last month. Shakopee makes a trip to Northfield (8-16) to wrap up their season. The Sabers won the first meeting over the Raiders 50-32.

But the headline game of the night may be when Farmington and No. 9, 3A New Prague square off at Farmington, with the winner guaranteed at least a share of the conference title. The Tigers have never beaten the Trojans in a Missota conference game, although they came close earlier this year, losing 45-42.

“They have good players, but they also have tradition,” Tigers coach Jason Berg said of New Prague, which won three consecutive Missota championships from 2007-09. “Half the battle is thinking or believing you can beat some of these teams, and our kids believe that we can beat teams like [New Prague]. For us and our kids, it’s a nice ending to the year that we’ve had, to play one game to see if you get a conference title.”

In all likelihood, there will be more than one winner in the Missota this season. With no tiebreakers in place to separate the teams, Shakopee athletic director John Janke said he expects to see at least two teams win a share of the title.

“We could have -- realistically and, I’d almost stretch to say likely -- tri-champions,” said Janke, noting that Shakopee and Chanhassen will be favored in their Friday night matchups. “It’s been a lot of fun to watch the race, and it’s been very exciting.”

Part of that excitement came on Tuesday night for Berg’s team. After earning a thrilling 48-47 win over Chaska, the Tigers boarded the bus and pooled their resources, trying to find out if the Trojans had beaten the Storm to force a four-way tie in the standings.

“We can only control the game that we’re playing, but we did some scoreboard watching (Tuesday) night. We got on the bus and everyone had their iPhones out and were checking the scores, and when we found out New Prague beat them, everyone got excited,” Berg said.

Prior Lake won the conference last year, but the Lakers have moved to the South Suburban this season. With the defending champs gone, the league has been a tight race all season. The top four teams have all split their season series’ with the exception of Shakopee, which beat New Prague in both meetings.

“We knew going into this year that the league was going to be pretty balanced,” Berg said. “It’s just one of those things where if teams don’t play well on a given night, you’re probably going to get beat. You’ve got to play your best, and even that may not be enough.”
