Junior guard is averaging more than 15 points per game

Makenzie Garibay

It has been nine years since South St. Paul's program has had a winning season. It has its most victories (eight) this year since the 2003-04 season.

A big reason why has been the play of junior guard Makenzie Garibay. She is averaging more than 15 points per game, and scored a career best 31 in a 59-48 loss to Tartan.

She is joined on the team by her twin sister Mikayla, who is a couple inches taller than the 5-3,and more talkative Makenzie.

Here is a closer look at Garibay:

Best movie I've seen in the past year: "The Proposal."

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are ... "Enchanted" by Taylor Swift; "Days Go By" by Keith Urban; "This" by Darius Rucker.

Three words my friends or teammates might use to describe me: Determined; leader; athletic.

Favorite pregame meal: Subway.

How did you get started in basketball? Experiencing my older siblings' basketball games, watching it on TV and starting at a young age.

Who is your school's biggest rival, and why? The Simley Spartans, because they are crosstown rivals, and it's always an emotional and intense game.

At my first varsity practice, I felt... nervous, excited.

To get focused for competition, I ... listen to my iPod.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Being able to play with my twin sister Mikayla!

What is the best prank the two of you have played on somebody? We don't look that much alike to be able to do something like that.

What is one thing Mikayla has that you wish you had? Thick hair.

What is one thing you have that you think Mikayla would want? My looks.

What did you work on in the offseason? I played on an AAU team and spent a lot of time working on my shot and range.

What are your goals for the 2010-11 school year as an athlete? Finishing with a better record this year than the previous season.

I know I have an edge on an opponent when ... I'm able to use my quickness to create a scoring opportunity for myself or a teammate.

What is the funniest thing to ever happen to you on the basketball court? I fall a lot, and have even landed on my face a couple of times. Somehow, I trip over my own feet.

Are you saying that you're a klutz? Sometimes I can be.

When you have time off during vacation, what do you like to do? Be with my family and friends.

In 10 years, I hope I've ... graduated from college, and have a career I love.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? Believe, and play with your heart.
