Seniors Baker and Adams hit milestone against Concordia Academy

It's enough of a rewarding moment for a coach to have to stop a game once to recognize a major milestone for a player. It's quite another to have to do it twice. In the same game.

"Never had to do that one before," Minnehaha Academy  coach Josh Thurow said.

Last Friday night against Concordia Academy, seniors Sarina Baker and Katelyn Adams reached the 1,000-point mark two possessions apart in the second half.

With a comfortable lead in the game, Thurow was able to call a full timeout after each shot to commemorate the events.

"It was really cool," Thurow said.

The two started the season close in career numbers. Baker, who transferred to Minnehaha Academy from DeLaSalle for her senior season, pulled ahead but went to Hawaii on a family vacation over the holidays. That gave Adams a chance to get back near even.

They came into Friday's game 17 (Baker) and 15 (Adams) points shy of 1,000.

Baker reached her moment first. She hit point No. 1,000 on a three-pointer en route to a game-high 22 points. Adams then hit a turnaround bank shot, giving her 1,001 points in her career.

"We had high hopes that it would happen because we're on the road for the next few games," Thurow said. "We had a nice crowd for it, and that was really nice for the girls.'

Just in case, Thurow had three game balls checked by the officiating crew before the game. Each player received one, and the game finished with the third.
