Bison travel to Wayzata

Whitney Burmeister, Jackson County Central

There is an intriguing metro matchup Friday night – Buffalo at Wayzata – that should give us more of a feel of exactly where the unbeaten Bison stand in Class 4A. They are currently ranked No. 4, but the Trojans will provide them with their biggest test of the season.

Buffalo (8-0) has only had one opponent stay within 14 points of them, and that was a 57-43 victory over Elk River in their season opener. A 14-point win over Wayzata will prove the Bison worthy of their ranking, but hardly a guarantee.

The Bison are led by 5-foot-11 senior center Molly Muntifering and senior guard Kendra Wycoff. They have 10 seniors on their roster.
Muntifering has been in double figures each game, and is averaging 14.8 points a night. She was the tournament MVP of the U.S. Bank Holiday Classic at St. Cloud Tech. Wycoff is averaging 12 points per game.

The Trojans (6-4), last year’s state tournament Cinderella story when it surprisingly won Section 6, has been tough on their home court.

Huskies are rolling

Class 2A, No. 8 Jackson County Central (11-0) has been rolling since the opening tip-off of the season. The Huskies have won their first 11 games by an average margin of 23.9 points, and haven’t had anybody stay within double figures.

Junior Whitney Burmeister (16.5 ppg, 12.8 rpg) has recorded a double-double in 10 of the team’s 11 games. Her top game of the season to date: 21 points, 20 rebounds and 11 steals in a game against Spirit Lake (Iowa) on Dec. 4.

The Huskies are hardly just Burmeister’s team. They have four players averaging double figures, and senior point guard Leslie Handzus has had 10 assists in each of the last two games and averages 6.1 for the season. They also have twins sisters in seniors Courtney (13.7 ppg) and Brittney (6.7 ppg) Kruse.

They host Pipestone (3-2), and outstanding senior guard Bree Woelber tonight. Woelber recorded a triple-double (15 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists) in a win over Redwood Valley in December.

Back in action, and committed

Chisago Lakes junior standout Whitney Tinjum returned to action this week after being sidelined with a concussion. The 6-foot-1 guard suffered the injury against Benilde-St. Margaret’s in a North Suburban Conference matchup on December 14.

Prior to returning to the court, Tinjum gave a verbal commitment to the Wisconsin Badgers. She is averaging 22.5 points per game is six tilts for the Wildcats (4-7), who were ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A preseason poll.

The Badgers are also recruiting Eden Prairie 6-foot-2 junior forward Jackie Johnson, who attended the Minnesota-Iowa game on Wednesday night.
