The Eastview girls' basketball team continues to impress. The Lightning, which has posted at least 20 victories in every season since 2006-07, is off to a quick 3-0 start this season after a sweep at the Hamline tournament and a 55-41 victory over Orono in the annual Tip-Off Classic last weekend at Hopkins High School.

"It's a real athletic crew that has started out well against some top teams," coach Paul Goetz said. "We're happy to get those three wins for right now, but we do have to improve in some areas, get into better shape and get our rotations set. We have a lot of new kids playing."

Eastview also will have to come up with a way to replace junior Amber Mehr for the short term. The starting forward tore cartilage in her right knee against the Spartans and will be out for an extended period of time, though Goetz expects her back this season.

"Hopefully she comes back strong," he said.

Seniors Cassidy Peterson and Claire Elliott are both candidates for that spot, as is sophomore Tyra Johnson.

Whoever fills in will join a solid foundation of Lightning players.

Twin sisters Alex and Amanda Beckman are multisport athletes on the wings to complement point guard Jenna Dockter. The 5-8 senior was named the MVP of the Hamline tournament with 33 points in two games while also contributing handily on defense.

"She'll do anything it takes to win the game," Goetz said. "She really is a basketball player at heart, just a gym rat. She'll be there for you from the opening minute until the end of the game."
