Tyseanna Johnson's 36 power Islanders past Minnetonka, 75-67

DeLaSalle's Tyseanna Johnson played as if she had a chip on her shoulder Saturday night in the Breakdown Sports Tip Off Classic.  As it turns out, it was weighing on her heart.  Johnson, whose 14-year-old brother Jarvis suffered a heart attack Wednesday, poured in 36 points to carry the Islanders to a 75-67 double overtime victory over Minnetonka.

"I played this game for my brother," said Johnson, who was on the phone just seconds after the game ended.

She sent the game to overtime with a long, rainbow three-pointer on a broken play, then iced it with a block and save in the final seconds of the second overtime.

"That kid is a fighter. She's a competitor," said DeLaSalle coach Faith Johnson Patterson.  "She had to reach down deep.  My team had to reach down deep. I'm really proud of them."

DeLaSalle broke to an early 10-0 lead, but Minnetonka slowly crept back into the game, courtesy of the toughness of Katy Winge (25 points) and Ali McCarthur (14).  The Skippers took the lead with one minute remaining when Winge hit a three-pointer from the key.

But Johnson willed the Islanders back into the game.  Lenah Starr added 18 points and was a key ball-handler, finding Johnson on many cuts.  The pair combined for 54 of the Islanders' 75 points.

"We needed that," said Patterson.  "I really appreciate that type of game because it shows them how tough they are."

Johnson played with a heavy heart, as her 14-year-old brother (and nephew of coach Faith Johnson Patterson) Jarvis suffered a heart attack Wednesday during his basketball practice.  Dedicating her game to him, Johnson ripped the nets for 36 points, including a game-tying three-pointer that sent the game to overtime.  She was outstanding at any range, from her three-point shot to her post-up moves.  Add in tough defense, including a block of a three-pointer that sealed the victory, and she was a true player of the game.
