Dec. 18: The Sabers face the Blaze in a pivotal game between teams in the loaded South Suburban Conference.

Shakopee's move to the South Suburban Conference last year made an already competitive league even more challenging.

This season the league looks to be another tough place to play, as the 10-team conference features six squads posting 3-1 or better overall records and three ranked in the top-10 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News.

The No. 6 Sabers (3-0) travel to Burnsville on Dec. 18 in each team's second conference game of the season.

Shakopee features North Carolina commit Taylor Koenen, leading the team with 18.3 points per game. The 6-foot-2 senior guard led the Sabers to the Class 4A State Tournament last season, where it lost to the buzzsaw that is Hopkins in the semifinals and lost to St. Michael-Albertville in the third-place game.

The Blaze (3-1) are off to a fast start this season after winning just five games last year and haven't beaten Shakopee since Jan. 14, 2012. Hannah Mitby is Burnsville's main weapon, with the 5-11 senior posting 16.0 ppg.

This early conference matchup will factor into how the South Suburban shakes out behind No.1-4A Eastview and makes it our Top Game of the Week.
