Edina guard MC McGrory's 26-point effort against Duluth East in Wednesday's Class 4A state tournament quarterfinals showed what she can do when healthy. She averaged about 19 points per game before suffering a concussion earlier this season, which forced her to miss her team's first meeting with the Greyhounds.

"Her ceiling is limitless," Hornets coach Matt Nilsen said.

The outlook was less promising in January, when Nilsen said McGrory "got foggy riding the stationary bike. It took a good three weeks to get her confidence, her flow and her conditioning back."

Patience and persistence paid off.

"I'm really glad we took our time and didn't force anything," Nilsen said. "We left it on her terms, and we're so happy to have her back."

Better than Banham?

Lakeville North's Caroline Sjoberg made the most of an otherwise down day for the Panthers.

Her three-pointer a minute into the second half of her team's loss to Hopkins was her 47th of the season, tying a 13-year-old team record set by Lakeville's Marissa Lingenfelter.

"She's the best pure shooter I've coached" from three-point range, veteran coach Andy Berkvam said.

Berkvam guided this season's Big Ten Freshman of the Year Rachel Banham in high school. Banham leads the Gophers in three-point shooting this season.

"She used to beat Rachel in challenges all the time," Berkvam smiled. "Caroline's a great, great shooter."

No. 3, with an edge

DeLaSalle coach Faith Johnson Patterson admitted that she and her team felt slighted after being seeded third in Class 3A. After all, the Islanders returned most of their 2011 state championship team and were ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press Class 3A poll.

"As a coach, you just want to make sure the girls are ready to play regardless, but it's tough," Johnson Patterson said. "It never hurts to have a little edge. I didn't have to say very much. The girls themselves know."

DeLaSalle was seeded third because some of the teams voted strictly on the QRF Points Rating system, which had DeLaSalle sixth before the seeding was done.

Cousin vs. cousin in Class 4A

When Edina and Osseo play Thursday for a chance to play in Saturday's Class 4A title game, there will be Mortons cheering for cousins on both teams. Janay Morton plays for Osseo and Jill Morton for Edina.
