A look at some big tournaments for basketball during schools' break week.

Hopkins is 9-0 as it heads into its annual home-court Dick’s Sporting Goods Holiday Classic tournament next week, but the Royals got a battle in a five-point victory over Lakeville North on Dec. 9. The Lindbergh Center doors open to a solid field that includes Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Osseo, Prior Lake, St. Paul Central, Hutchinson and Rufus King of Milwaukee. The Royals have star power in sisters Nia (16.3 points per game) and Sydney (10.9) Coffey, among others. But watch out for Eden Prairie. The Eagles’ Shayne Mullaney and Jackie Johnson are a potent combination of passing, shooting, scoring and blocking that can give any team fits.

In addition, Northwest Suburban Conference notables Maple Grove and Osseo come into the tournament on hot starts of their own. The Orioles have four players (Mikayla Bailey, Phillis Webb, Janay Morton and Olivia Antilla) averaging more than 11 points per game.

Other tournaments of note:

Richfield Tournament (Dec. 27-28)
Teams: Richfield, St. Paul Highland Park, Bloomington Kennedy, Prairie Seeds
Player to watch: Guard Jade Martin (17.7 points per game) has twice put up more than 20 points in a game (including 23 against Eden Prairie).

Lakeville South Tournament (Dec. 27-29)
Teams: Lakeville South, Blaine, Chanhassen, Minneapolis South
Player to watch: Lauren Shifflett has been a big contributor since returning to Chanhassen’s lineup following an injury. In a three-point loss to Class 3A stalwart Hill-Murray last week, the junior guard, who has led the Storm in scoring the past two seasons,  dumped in 20 points.

Rochester Rotary Classic (Dec. 27-29)
Teams: Rochester Mayo, Rochester Lourdes, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Century, Bloomington Jefferson, Providence Academy, White Bear Lake, Lakeville North.
Player to watch: Lakeville North’s Taylor Stewart scored at least 15 points in five of the Panthers’ first six games of the season.
