Providence Academy will have at least one night to celebrate after achieving one of its season's objectives on Friday night.
But a larger goal still awaits.
The Lions defeated Holy Family 95-81 to clinch the Class 2A, Section 5 championship game at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. And judging by the spirited celebration from the Providence Academy team after taking photos with the section championship plaque, the victory meant quite a bit.
Providence Academy is headed back to the Class 2A state tournament one season after playing in the state championship game.
The Lions defeated Holy Family 95-81 in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship game to advance to the state tournament. Last year, they advanced to the Class 2A state championship game before falling to Albany 57-43.
The Fire made Providence Academy sweat in the first half, leading by as much as six points with five-and-a-half minutes remaining before halftime. But a 14-2 run by the Lions helped them regain control, building a 38-32 lead at the half.
Maddyn Greenway scored 31 points to lead the Lions, including 19 in the second half. Maria Counts also scored 23 points.
Sophia Hall led the Fire's offense with 24 points.
