When St. Michael-Albertville played in last season’s Class 4, Section 8 final against Elk River, all Knights guard Tessa Johnson could do was watch as her team fell to the Elks.

On Thursday, St. Michael-Albertville found itself back in the section final. This time, Johnson was on the floor, and she made quite the impact. The junior guard poured in 30 points — including 19 in the first half — to help propel the Knights past Rogers 64-54 to advance to next week’s Class 4A state tournament.

First Report

Despite a late push by the Royals in the second half, St. Michael-Albertville held on to win 64-54 and capture the Class 4A, Section 8 final on Wednesday at Monticello High School.

St. Michael-Albertville’s Tessa Johnson helped the Knights gain a 13-point lead against Rogers in the first half with 19 points.

Johnson owned the first half with her 19 points, matching Rogers’ entire first-half offensive output. Royals senior guard Ellie Buzzelle paced the Royals with 12 first-half points.

In the second half, Rogers got back to even thanks in large part to Buzzelle and junior forward Katelyn Maciej. Buzzelle finished with 22 while Maciej poured in 13 points.

Tied at 50 late in the second half, St. Michael-Albertville went on an 11-0 run to provide some much needed relief. Johnson added 11 more in the second half to finish with 30. She was the only Knight in double figures. Freshman post Lauren Hoselton was the next top scorer with nine points.

With the win, St. Michael-Albertville advances to next week’s state tournament. It’s the Knights’ first appearance since 2020.
