The most points Roseville’s Drew Johnston had scored in a game was 24 points. She did that just last Thursday, March 3, part of the team’s nail-biting win over Park Center in the Class 4A, Section 5 quarterfinals.
Just five days later, Johnston topped that number, scoring a career high 31 points to lead her team past Spring Lake Park 63-46 in the section semifinals Tuesday night at Roseville High School.
“My top score was 24, and 31 was such a good feeling,” Johnston said. “I’ve never done that before. The whole crowd went crazy, my bench there for me. I just thought it was good energy.”
Johnston, who averages 14.3 points per game, had everything working for her tonight. She scored her team’s first bucket, a nice floater, and then got hot from beyond the arc. Johnston said her approach on the offensive side of the ball is to look for the 3-point shot first.
A career-night from Drew Johnston helped the Raiders take down the Panthers 63-46 in the Class 4A, Section 5 semifinal Tuesday night at Roseville High School.
Johnston scored 31 points, the most in her career, and knocked down three 3-pointers.
Roseville led for most of the game and took a 26-16 lead into halftime.
The Raiders (20-8) were able to limit Spring Lake Park’s leading scorer Bella Sutch. The starting forward posted 17 points, but nine of those came from the free throw line. Senior Averi Dunbar added 12 points in her final game as a Panther.
The Raiders capitalized on the 50-50 balls, double-teaming and scrapping for steals. Kendall Barnes and Hannah Hefferman each added eight points for Roseville, en route to avenging its loss to Spring Lake Park (14-14) earlier this season. The Panthers also beat the Raiders in the section semifinals last year.
