In the Class 4A, Section 2 tournament last year, Chaska was the No. 1 seed and won all three games at home by double digits on its way to an undefeated season and a state title. Its closest game in last year’s section tournament was a 60-44 win over Shakopee in the semifinals.

The stage was set again this year, with the Hawks (23-4, 15-1) holding the top seed in the section, hosting the Sabers (25-3, 17-1) in the semifinals.

The tables turned this time, with the Sabers going on the road and coming away with a 59-48 win to advance to the section final.

First Report

Shakopee went on the road and defeated Chaska, the defending Class 4A champions, 59-48 in the Class 4A, Section 2 semifinal.

The game started off with a lot of intensity, which you would expect from two top-10 teams playing to keep their seasons alive. The No. 8-ranked Sabers (25-3, 17-1) shot threes early and often. They drained seven of them in the first half. Kate Cordes made three of them, accounting for nine of her 11 first half points. Kennedy Sanders ran the offense for the No. 3-ranked Hawks (23-4, 15-1). She scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the first half.

The Sabers, leading 30-19 at the break, attacked the rim more in the second half and took control of the game. They got to the line 28 times in the second half, making 20 of them. Jasmyn Hale was the calming force for the Sabers. She brought the ball up against a full-court press and got to the line frequently to help her score a game-high 22 points. She added five rebounds and three assists.

The Sabers will face Eden Prairie in the section final on Friday for a chance to play in the state tournament.
