Heading into the matchup against Hill-Murray, Ronnie Porter was quite nervous.

Porter had some stress lingering in her head and wanted to end it as quickly as possible. No one in the stands would have been able to tell based on how she played.

The senior guard for St. Paul Como Park finished with a season-high 41 points in an 85-54 win over the Pioneers. The first five, however, were the ones she’ll remember most, as Porter reached the 2,000 career points milestone.

Porter’s 1,999th and 2,000th points came at the free-throw line. As the basketball swooshed through the hoop on 2,000, a group of people marched through the gym with signs and balloons. Multiple fans stood up and cheered “Ronnie! Ronnie! Ronnie!” Porter did not fully appreciate the moment until the clock hit zero.

First Report

Stifling defense and hot shooting helped propel St. Paul Como Park to an 85-54 victory over Hill-Murray Feb. 11.

Senior guard Ronnie Porter recorded a season-high 41 points for the Cougars, the first five being very monumental. Less than four minutes into the game, Porter reached the 2,000 career points milestone.

St. Paul Como Park continued to gain momentum after Porter's achievement. Porter and fellow senior guard Kaylynn Asberry began to heat up from beyond the three-point line and the Cougars used their defense to convert points in transition. Asberry added 15 points.

The Pioneers were without leading scorer senior forward Ella Runyon. Cougars’ head coach Olonda England said the defensive game plan was to be more aggressive once they found out Runyon was not playing. Freshman guard Elise Groppoli led Hill-Murray with 13 points.

St. Paul Como Park moved to 17-7 on the season while Hill-Murray fell to 10-9. The win was another notch in the Cougars’ belt, as they came into the matchup ranked third in Class 3A as of Feb. 9.
