The Skippers had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds of the game, but the Eagles blocked the shot and walked away with the victory.

A clear-cut winner may have been in question for all 36 minutes in a heated road battle, but Eden Prairie’s self-belief never came up for debate.

Eden Prairie heeded a pregame message to believe in one’s self, and the team, to find success. It paid off in a 66-63 win over conference and section rival  Minnetonka.

“The key, for us, is the fact we stepped together. We kept it positive,” Eden Prairie coach Ellen Wiese said. “I actually had a talk with them before the game about getting rid of any doubt. Our whole theme was ‘Do not doubt. Don’t doubt yourself, don’t doubt your teammate, don’t doubt your coach.’ ”

Minnetonka was shorthanded without senior guard and Creighton commit Kiani Lockett, who was sidelined with crutches for an injury sustained last week. She played a vocal role on the sidelines and had plenty to cheer about early on.

First Report

In a game filled with lead changes, Eden Prairie found itself on top when the clock hit zeroes.

Eden Prairie (15-3), No. 4 in the Feb. 2 Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A rankings, won 66-63 Friday at No. 2 Minnetonka (16-3).

The Skippers were without leading scorer, Kiani Lockett, due to injury. Nonetheless, they started strong on an 8-1 run.

Eden Prairie came back to lead by seven in the first half before Grace Hamdorf hit a three at the halftime buzzer to cut the Eagles’ advantage to 32-30.

Eden Prairie slowly built up a lead to as much as nine in the closing minutes. A 6-0 Minnetonka run capped by senior guard Desiree Ware’s layup tied the game for Minnetonka.

The Eagles were led by a game high 21 points by senior forward. She had a basket inside to give Eden Prairie a two-point lead in the final minute and made a steal and hit one of two foul shots on an ensuing layup attempt.

Freshman forward Aaliyah Crump had nine of her 15 points in the second half for the Skippers.
