By the final stages of Tuesday night’s clash between Minnetonka and St. Michael-Albertville, it was clear this was a matchup between two of the best basketball players in the state.

The Skippers’ Kiani Lockett and the Knights’ Tessa Johnson went toe-to-toe, trading buckets in a highly entertaining affair. Only one could come out victorious, however.

The nine 3-pointers by Lockett were enough to push her Minnetonka squad to a 64-59 win over St. Michael-Albertville at Minnetonka High School.

When asked if she’s ever hit that many 3s in a game before, Lockett responded, “I don’t think so.”

First Report

Kiani Lockett knocked down nine 3-pointers, helping Minnetonka to a 64-59 win over St. Michael-Albertville in Lake Conference action Tuesday night at Minnetonka High School.

The Knights (5-2), No. 7 in the Dec. 8 Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A ranking, grabbed the advantage in the early going, pushing the ball up the floor on every opportunity, turning turnovers into points. Junior Tessa Johnson led the charge for St. Michael-Albertville, giving her team a 35-24 lead at halftime.

Lockett remained relatively quiet in the first half, only knocking down two 3s.

No. 3-4A Minnetonka (6-0) turned things around in the second half. Playing as a unit, the Skippers chipped away at the Knights lead. Lockett started knocking down shots from near midcourt, and players like Aaliyah Crump and Grace Hamdorf stepped up and hit big shots.

The final stages of the game saw both teams trading buckets, specifically Lockett and Johnson going back and forth. Johnson scored a team-high 25 points for St. Michael-Albertville, while Lockett tallied a game-high 33 points, that gritty defense propelled Minnetonka to victory.

Crump, a freshman, finished with 13 points for Minnetonka, while Ja’kahla Craft added nine for the Knights.
