With games starting early Saturday morning and throughout the day at Hopkins High School as part of the Breakdown Tip Off Classic, players and fans from other teams elected to stick around for the game’s final day between Class 4A heavyweights Chaska and Hopkins.

Those who waited for the 8:45 p.m. tip saw a Royals squad ready to get back at a Chaska team that stunned them eight months prior in the Class 4A state semifinal as the Hawks went on to win the state crown. Hopkins took hold of its shot and then some as the Royals blew past Chaska 70-45.

Hopkins entered the 2021 Class 4A state tournament as the top seed riding a 78-game win streak. The Royals took on Chaska in the state semifinal where the Hawks, also undefeated, shocked the state as the Hawks took down Hopkins 67-62. Saturday marked the first time these teams had met since the infamous game.

“We did not like last year’s game at all,” said Hopkins junior forward Taylor Woodson. “Last year was just fuel. It was a revenge game.”

First Report

After falling to Chaska in the Class 4A state tournament semifinal in March, Hopkins wasted zero time extracting revenge on the Hawks. The Royals jumped out to a 20-point lead early and the game and saw it grow from there as Hopkins won 70-45 on Saturday at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Hopkins High School.

In the first half, the Royals (5-0) led by as many as 26 points while holding Chaska to just 15 first-half points. Hopkins senior forward Maya Nnaji paced the offense with 10 in the opening half while finishing with 17 along with six rebounds.

Nnaji’s teammate, junior forward Taylor Woodson was close behind with nine first-half points. She finished with a double-double as she tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In the second half, Hopkins, ranked No. 1 in the Nov. 24 Class 4A ranking by Minnesota Basketball News, continued to push down on the gas as the Royals pushed their lead to 30 points. Hopkins sophomore guard Liv McGill scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half.

The No. 2-4A Hawks (1-1) were flustered by an aggressive full-court pressure defense from Hopkins. Chaska’s top scorer in its first game, University of Minnesota commit Mallory Heyer, had zero points in the first half. Heyer improved in the second half as she secured a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The main focal point of the Chaska offense was junior guard Kennedy Sanders. She led all Hawks with 17 points.
