The first game of any season always brings uncertainties with it. Those uncertainties grow exponentially when a vast majority of your roster from a previous season is now gone.

“We lost 100% of everything,” Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler said about the turnover from last season.

The Cardinals had to replace the top eight leading scorers from last year’s team, as seven of them were seniors and the one returning player, Morgan Jones, suffered a season-ending injury.

“Our seniors that we have know they can’t do it by themselves, I mean there’s only a few of them, so I told the girls I don’t care how old you are, if you can play, you can play and everybody needs to be a leader in their own way,” Kohler said.

First Report

Alexandria opened its season with a 58-46 win on the road at Delano on Tuesday night.

The game started balanced, with the Tigers (0-1, 0-0) getting a couple early threes from Kelly Peterson to take the lead. The Cardinals (1-0, 0-0) settled themselves down, and once they took the lead about halfway through the first half, they didn’t let it go from there.

They went into halftime leading 34-24 thanks to 13 first-half points from freshman Hadley Thul. She went on to finish as the game’s leading scorer and rebounder, with 21 and 12, respectively.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the second half with sound defense and a few threes from fellow freshman Allie Haabala. She finished with 14 points.

Peterson led the way for the Tigers, as she had a team-high 11 points. She added eight rebounds, which tied Cora Beeler for the team lead. They also got an all-around contribution from Taylor Tool, as she put up 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
