The Upsala Cardinals girls’ basketball team hoped they would pick up where they left off last season. When they opened the 2011-12 season last Friday night, they did just that.

The Cardinals stormed out of the gates opening their game against the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder with a 25-0 run. There was no looking back as the Cardinals opened the season up with a 64-34 win.

Head coach Paul Pelzer was impressed with how the girls started off the game.

“They were fired up and ready to play,” he said. “The excitement and energy was apparent as they stormed out to that 25-0 lead.”

The Cardinals were led in the scoring column by junior Aimee Pelzer who finished with 20 points.

Senior Kimmy Mrozek was the only other Cardinal to hit double figures tallying 16 points.

Pelzer nearly reached a triple-double on the night leading the team with 11 assists and nine steals.

The Cardinals had 10 of 13 players get into the scoring column on the night. The team finished with 30 rebounds, four blocks, 21 steals, and 22 assists.

Coach Pelzer was pleased with how the girls opened up the season. “It was good opening the season with a victory,” he said. “Sometimes you never know what to expect from a first game.”

The girls host Pillager Thursday for their second game of the season.
