For the Browerville girls’ basketball team, last Tuesday night was the first varsity basketball action many of them had ever experienced. The girls have a very young team at every position this season.
The girls played hard against a physical Verndale Pirates team but were unable to stick with the Pirates in the second half, falling 50-61.
The Tigers struggled to hold Verndale’s Teresa Moendick in check as she finished with a game high 27 points.
Browerville’s two eighth graders Paige Callahan and Kendra Buchta had a good start to the season.
“They played exceptionally well down low for us,” head coach Matt Middendorf said. “They moved their feet well and didn’t get rattled in a physical game.”
Callahan finished the night with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Buchta had 10 rebounds.
Eighth grade guard Kale Knutson also had a good night leading the team with four steals and six assists.
Before the season, Middendorf emphasized improving as a team each and every day this season. The girls did just that in this game.
“The girls played extremely hard and boxed out well against a physical Verndale team,” he said. “Our younger kids got their first taste of varsity basketball and it was exciting to watch them improve with every possession.”
