The Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder girls’ basketball team opened up their season last Tuesday with a home game against the Holdingford Huskies.
It was a defensive battle between the two Section 6AA opponents but Holdingford’s full court pressure proved to be too much for the Thunder in the second half as they fell 37-39.
Both offenses did a much better job in the first half as the score was 27-26 at halftime.
The second half was a completely different story as the defenses locked down as Holdingford scored only 12 as LPGE scored 11.
The Thunder took a small lead for the majority of the second half, but the Huskies put on relentless full court pressure on the Thunder’s guards.
LPGE also gave the Huskies many extra possessions.
“Turnovers and missed opportunities was the difference as we committed 24 turnovers and gave up 26 offensive rebounds,” head coach Steve Christians said. “We will need to get better at handling perimeter pressure and will also work on our rebounding.”
Jenna Langer recorded a double-double on the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sam Zastrow finished with a team high 13 points and added nine rebounds.
