It was such a big deal to the Royals that guard Amaya Battle — one of many stars in the Hopkins universe — had no idea it matched the record.
“It was?” she asked. “I didn’t even know how many we had. We don’t really talk about it. It’s just something that’s there.”
The record has not been a point of emphasis for the Royals. They’ve been too focused on returning to the state championship game after losing the opportunity last year because of the pandemic.
Battle, a smooth 5-10 point guard, was front and center in the Royals’ effort Tuesday, finishing with 14 points and nearly as many assists, often of the spectacular variety.
“It’s been a couple of rough days in practice because Coach (Tara) Starks has been getting on me,” Battle admitted. “I wasn’t being an overall leader and playing to my full potential. And you know, when coach gets on you, you’re like, ‘I can do better.’ ”
Forest Lake (17-4) was led by 12 points apiece from Logan Anderson and Greta Krieger.
“That’s a tough team,” Battle said. “They really played hard.”
