Neither a botched starting lineup announcement nor a balky national anthem recording stopped the Chaska girls’ basketball team from advancing to next week’s state Class 4A semifinals at Target Center.

The still-undefeated Hawks did so Tuesday with a 75-57 quarterfinal victory over previously unbeaten Stillwater in which fearless 5-8 sophomore point guard Kennedy Sanders scored 31 points.

Chaska’s reserves rather than its starters were announced at Osseo High School. Prolonged silence followed when masked fans stood to sing the anthem, so Hawks fans started quietly on their own, singing it themselves until the whole gym joined unaccompanied.

“That stuff happens,” Chaska coach Tara Seifert said, smiling. “That’s just part of our COVID year, right? You can’t expect things to run smoothly.”
