Sometimes shots don’t fall. The ball doesn’t always bounce your way and players can have off nights. One thing every team can control is defensive effort and intensity.

From the opening tip of Tuesday’s Class 4A, Section 4 semifinal matchup against White Bear Lake, East Ridge poured its energy into the defensive side of the ball. The Raptors (15-5) forced 19 turnovers en route to a 51-34 win at East Ridge High School.

“Tonight it just all happened to be clicking on the same cylinder when it came to defense,” said Raptors coach Ashley Ellis-Milan. “When you play a team three times, it’s tough and it’s hard to beat a team three times. I give the girls a lot of credit because they bought into the game plan and they executed it very well.”

First Report

Behind its stifling defense and balanced offense, East Ridge knocked off rival White Bear Lake in the Class 4A, Section 4 semifinals 51-34 on Tuesday at East Ridge High School.

Freshman guard Sidney Klauer and sophomore guard Emily Christensen led the Raptors (15-5) offensively with 12 and 11 points, respectively, but it was the team’s defensive prowess that led to the impressive victory. The Raptors forced 19 Bears’ turnovers and were often able to capitalize in transition. Even with Christensen — the Raptors’ leading scorer — in foul trouble late in the first half, the Raptors went into the break with a nine-point advantage.

Christensen still started the second despite accumulating four fouls and she helped jumpstart a Raptors’ run to start the half. She executed a five-point East Ridge run to open the half, and the Raptors continued to pull away even after she went to the bench for an extended period. She fouled out with 4:40 left to play.

Junior forward Nevaeh Hughes did her best to keep the Bears (10-10) in the game with 13 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Raptors held every other Bears player under 10 points.

With the victory, the Raptors move on to the section championship game, where they will play either Stillwater or Cretin-Derham Hall for a chance to advance to the state tournament.
