Tigers begin season with no juniors or seniors on team

Freshman MaKenna Hegseth will return as the only starter from last year's team.

After graduating five seniors from last season’s 5-20 team, the Browerville Tigers girls’ basketball team might be in for a wait-and-see type season.

The Tigers will usher in a group of players that includes no juniors or seniors.

The lone starter that remains from last year’s squad is ninth grader MaKenna Hegseth. The Tigers will have to replace 90 percent of the scoring from last season.

With such a young group of players, head coach Matt Middendorf will be emphasizing fundamentals this year.

“We have a lot of energy,” Middendorf said. “The girls are working hard, listening, and eager to learn."

Despite being so young, Middendorf says the girls are talented and should be able to learn on the fly.

In the offseason, the team has practiced fundamentals and attended a couple tournaments. “We are focused on learning the game and doing the basics, that will be our emphasis this season,” Middendorf said.

The girls will have some time to practice those fundamentals before they play their first game on November 29 against Verndale.

“It’s going to take some patience, but we have kids that want to work hard and want to get better,” Middendorf said. “We will concentrate on getting better everyday.”
