Thirty-two straight wins. At least a share of a third straight conference title. A 1,000-point career scorer.

There were milestones aplenty for Farmington to celebrate Thursday night, but getting there didn’t come easy, as the Tigers outlasted rival Rosemount 52-47 in South Suburban Conference action at Farmington High School.

The Tigers’ closest win prior to Thursday was by eight points and they entered their matchup with the Irish (12-3) winning by an average of nearly 25 points per game.

“I think it's good to play close games right now heading into playoffs, when you've got to work on certain situations out of timeouts and executing toward the end,” said Farmington coach Liz Carpentier. “I thought it was good for our team.”

Good for Farmington early on was senior guard Maleah Scott, who finished with 15 points. Both teams had entered the night holding foes under 40 points a contest, but Scott was able to push past tough person-to-person defense to keep the Tigers (15-0) afloat early, giving them a 13-11 lead near the midway point of the first half.

“Maleah Scott in the first half, she was a huge offensive spark,” Carpentier said. “Out of the first 10 or 11 points, she probably had eight.”

First Report

Farmington remains one of just a handful of unbeaten teams in Class 4A after a tight win Thursday, as the Tigers knocked off South Suburban Conference rival Rosemount 52-47 at Farmington High School.

The Tigers and Irish entered the night as the top two teams in the conference in defense, holding opponents under 40 points a game. That type of effort continued as both schools came out of the gate playing sturdy person-to-person defense.

In a matchup of future college post players, Rosemount 6-foot senior and Oakland University commit Helen Staley had the upper hand in the first half with eight points, compared to just two for Farmington’s 6-foot-4 senior Sophie Hart, a North Carolina State signee.

Rosemount (12-3) got out to an 11-8 lead which was followed by an 8-0 Farmington burst. The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, led by as much as six points in the opening half before a Staley bank shot prior to the buzzer cut the deficit to 22-20 at halftime.

Hart quickly got involved in the Tigers offense in the second half with a turnaround shot in the paint, which got her going to collect 13 of her 15 points in the second half.

Doing work on the perimeter were senior guards Maleah Scott and Paige Kindseth, who was lethal from the mid-range. Scott finished with 15 points. A jumper in the second half pushed Kindseth, who finished with 13 points, past the 1,000 career points milestone. Soon after, another basket gave Farmington (15-0) its biggest lead of the night at 45-36.

Rosemount worked its way back, however, with effective cutting off of Staley. Junior guard Alexa Ratzlaff was one of the key benefactors, finishing with a team-high 12 points, and Staley had 11 points.

The Irish never led in the second half but were tied twice and got within 45-44 with under four minutes to go.

With the victory, Farmington ensured it gets at least a share of this year’s South Suburban crown. The Tigers can clinch the title outright with a win in any of their last three regular-season games, or if Rosemount loses before the postseason.
