Megan Weber's three-point barrage helps Henning get past Fillmore Central

Guard Megan Weber had a consistent answer to Fillmore Central’s zone defense.

The Henning junior made a six three-pointers, equaling her season high, en route to 29 points, to lead the No. 4-rated Hornets to a 69-56 victory a Class 1A quarterfinal Thursday at the Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus.

Both teams were appearing in their first state tournament.

“I absolutely love when teams play a zone defense,” Weber said. “It opens up spots for us.”

Her backcourt partner, junior Ellie Dague, added 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists for Henning (29-2).

“We’ve seen 1-3-1 zones a lot this year,” Hornets coach Mike Hepola said. “It was definitely helpful.''

Henning built an 11-point halftime lead, 32-21, to 24 points in the first six minutes of the second half. The Falcons used a late run to draw within nine points with less than a minute left.

“We were ready for this moment,” Hepola said.

Senior guard Kassidy Broadwater had a game-high 30 points for the Falcons (22-9).
