Becker’s goal to avenge last season’s Class 3A state championship game loss almost fell apart Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Alexandria gave the second-seed Bulldogs all they could handle. The teams were tied with less than five minutes left before Becker emerged with a 63-55 victory.

Junior guard Julia Bengtson scored three of her team-best 16 points to provide the Bulldogs with a 49-45 edge. Alexandria (22-8) called a timeout. But when the Cardinals retook the floor, they failed to inbound the ball within five seconds.

Becker (27-2) received possession. Bulldogs players who denied the entry pass gained confidence.

“That was the moment the momentum switched, and we became in control,” Bengtson said.
