As underdog Hermantown pulled within a basket of tying her top-seeded team in the first half, DeLaSalle coach Tanysha Scott said she thought “I told you so.”

“This week, I told the girls, ‘You can’t underestimate any team at the state tournament because these are the top eight teams playing their best basketball,’ ” Scott said.

Defending Class 3A champion DeLaSalle recovered from its first half skid and earned a 85-52 quarterfinal victory thanks to its effective press defense and three-point shooting. The Islanders (25-4) sank 13-of-23 three pointers and scored 30 points off 19 Hermantown turnovers.

“We missed four chippies that I think could’ve made a little bit of a difference,” Hawks coach Beth Clark said. “But hats off to DeLaSalle. They are the best team in the state.”
