Heritage Christian puts away familiar section final foe to reach 1A state tournament

Before 2018, Heritage Christian Academy had never made it to the state tournament. Since then, the school hasn’t missed it.

The Eagles avenged a regular season loss to Mayer Lutheran, topping the Crusaders 73-60 in the Class 1A, Section 4 championship Friday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College to clinch their third consecutive section title.

Leading by as many as 16 points in the second half, Heritage Christian saw its lead evaporate down the stretch. A 27-11 run by Mayer Lutheran tied the game at 55-55 before Heritage Christian Academy went on an 18-5 run to close out the game.

Heritage Christian Academy advanced to its first state tournament in 2018. The school hasn’t missed once since.

The Eagles avenged a regular season loss to Mayer Lutheran, topping the Crusaders 73-60 in the Class 1A Section 4 championship Friday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

It’s the fourth consecutive year Heritage Christian Academy has knocked Mayer Lutheran out of the section tournament.

Heritage Christian Academy looked ready to run away with the game early in the second half. The Eagles led by as many as 16 before Mayer Lutheran strung together a 27-11 run to tie the game at 55 with just over four minutes to play.

However, it was the Eagles' turn for a run as they scored 18 of the final 23 points to close the game out.

Heritage Christian senior Kirstin Robbins finished with a game-high 26 points. Teammate Taylor Schuck had 21.

Heritage Christian Academy finished third last year's state tournament.
