State tournament play is about surviving and moving on. That’s exactly what Goodhue did Thursday.
The Wildcats overcame turnovers, missed shots, and plenty of bad decisions in the final five minutes to hold off Mountain-Iron Buhl 50-48 in the Class 1A quarterfinals at the Maturi Pavilion. They defeated the Rangers by 10 points, 53-43, during the regular season.
“It doesn’t matter how you advance,” Goodhue coach Josh Wieme said. “We have a pretty young team, and they haven’t played in a state tournament game before today.”
On the other hand, Mountain Iron-Buhl was in ninth consecutive state tournament. It had four seniors in the starting lineup compared to Goodhue’s two.
