Sophomore guard Paige Meyer scored 32 points to lead unseeded Albany to a 60-49 upset of No. 2 seed Holy Family on Wednesday in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

“We knew they were going to be a big team, so we knew we had to box out and get rebounds,” said Meyer, who had 16 rebounds. “We knew they were fast so we had to stop their transition game.”

After trailing at halftime at Maturi Pavilion, the Huskies (19-10) took the lead in the first four minutes of the second half and expanded it to 39-31 after a three-point basket by Meyer.

The Fire (23-6) came back and narrowed the margin to a point in the final four minutes. But the Huskies scored 11 of their last 14 points on free throws to seal the outcome.

“We had some really good looks, they didn’t fall,’’ Holy Family coach Adrian Turner said. “We fought hard. We scrambled, we scratched. We just were a step slow today.”

First report

Sophomore guard Paige Meyer scored 32 points to lead unseeded Albany to a 60-40 upset of No. 2 seed Holy Family on Wednesday in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

Trailing at halftime at Maturi Pavilion, the Huskies (19-10) took the lead in the first 4 minutes of the second half and expanded it to 39-31 after a three-point basket by Meyer.

The Fire (24-5) came back and narrowed the margin to a point in the final four minutes. But the Huskies scored 11 of the last 14 free throws to seal the outcome.

The Fire's 26-23 halftime lead came when freshman guard Nicole Bowlin called for the ball, shot from three-point range and ran off the court at the buzzer, confident it would fall in. It did.

Meyer had 14 of Albany's 23 points at the break and took 13 of her team’s 17 first-half shots. The Fire forced 16 turnovers in the first half alone.
