It would have been easy to write Holy Angels off entering the season. Many wanted to, some did. But yet again, like the last three years, the Stars will be at the state tournament.

In the Class 3A, Section 3 championship game, St. Croix Lutheran didn’t make it easy, coming back from 15 points down to get within a point in the final minute. But Thursday at Bloomington Jefferson High School, Holy Angels raised the championship trophy for the fourth straight year, thanks to, not in spite of, a young roster.

“It means a lot,” sophomore Frankie Vascellaro said. “I think we really wanted it and knew we could win.”

The Stars won the Class 3A consolation bracket at state last spring. Then they lost two seniors to graduation and a pair of key players to transfer — Kaylie VanDerWerf to Burnsville and University of Arkansas signee Destinee Oberg to Bloomington Kennedy. But a roster of largely underclassmen rose to the occasion.

“Most definitely, losing four starters, two transfers,” coach Dan Woods said. “And then to come back, this is gigantic.”

First report

It was a similar story for both teams in the Class 3A, Section 3 championship Thursday at Bloomington Jefferson.

Holy Angels, securing a fourth-straight trip to the state tournament, won 60-53 over St. Croix Lutheran, which lost in a section final for the sixth time since 2010. But the Crusaders certainly didn’t make it easy on the Stars.

Down 15 points at junctures in the second half, St. Croix Lutheran stormed almost all the way back, thanks in part to six three-pointers over the final 18 minutes.

Luci Hauge had a chance to tie the game with a free throw, but missed the second of two to pull the Crusaders within 54-53 with 1 minute, 1 second to play. The Stars made their free throws down the stretch to secure the title and return to state.

Rachel Kawiecki, along with Isabelle and Emma Henry, carried the Stars (21-7) in the first half, as they entered the break up 31-17. Kawiecki finished the night with 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Frankie Vascellaro and Isabelle Henry led Holy Angels with 12 points each, while Emma Mastre added 11.

Juel Skrien and Laura Hauge led St. Croix Lutheran (18-10) with 12 points each. Luci Hauge scored 11 and had 14 rebounds, while Kenna Moon had nine points on a trio of three-pointers.
