St. Paul Como Park vs.

Minnehaha Academy

7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23

As far as offense is concerned, few teams in Class 3A seem able to contend with St. Paul Como Park. The Cougars, averaging 78 points per game, have already surpassed the 90-point threshold three times in victories.

While the No. 9-3A Cougars' overall record doesn't seem particularly impressive, Como Park (8-4, 3-0) has not shied away from scheduling a demanding schedule, as three of its four losses came against Class 4A opponents (77-54 to No. 5-4A St. Michael-Albertville on Nov. 29; 82-79 to St. Louis Park on Dec. 6; 75-57 to No. 2-4A Wayzata on Dec. 20).

Two sophomores have helped keep the Cougars' offense humming this season. Ronnie Porter has been a key cog, averaging more than 18 points a game. Kaylynn Asberry (13.9 ppg) has also been a top producer.

Though Minnehaha Academy competes in Class 2A, the defending state champion Redhawks should challenge Como Park.

The No. 5-2A Redhawks (11-3, 3-0) have outscored opponents by an average margin of 21 points with their most highly contested win coming on Nov. 23 in an 89-86 triple-overtime victory over No. 1-2A Sauk Centre at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic.

Senior guard Mia Curtis has been dominant for Minnehaha Academy this season. She averages 26.3 points per game and has scored 30 or more points four times.
