Mankato West vs. Marshall

5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4

There's a good possibility that this season's Class 3A, Section 2 championship will be won by either Marshall or Mankato West, and on Saturday they'll meet giving fans a potential playoff preview.

Mankato West (7-2, 5-2) has been dominant outside of matchups with state-ranked teams this season. Its two losses came against No. 4-3A Red Wing (66-57 on Dec. 3) and No. 5-3A Austin (78-71 on Dec. 12).

Mankato West's high-powered offense, led by junior Briana Stoltzman, has averaged 70 points per game this season. In a 91-60 victory over Owatonna on Nov. 23, the guard recorded 29 points.

Marshall ended Mankato West's season a year ago with a 59-45 victory in the section semifinals before defeating Waseca to claim a state tournament berth.

For the No. 8-3A Tigers (7-0, 2-0) to defeat their section foe, expect a strong game from Jordyn Hilgremann. In six of the first seven games of the season, the junior forward has averaged 23 points per game.
