Minneapolis South

vs. Wayzata

7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22

Now that Wayzata (23-1, 6-1) lost its first and only game of the season to rival and likely Lake Conference co-champion Hopkins, the Trojans turn their focus to Minneapolis South (20-3, 11-0).

The No. 2-4A Trojans' 69-38 loss to No. 3-4A Hopkins last Friday snapped a 23-game winning streak. In addition to giving up their bid for an undefeated season, the massive deficit against a conference foe had to leave a bad taste in their mouths, setting up this late-season chance to right the ship before section play begins. Wayzata is led offensively by Kallie Theisen (14.2 ppg) and Jenna Johnson (11 ppg).

With the Nos. 1 and 2 Section 6 seeds locked in by Hopkins and Wayzata, the Tigers will likely be No. 3, meaning they’ll have to beat Wayzata or Hopkins to face the other in the final.

Last season, both South and Wayzata lost to Hopkins in the section tournament. The Tigers lost 85-42 in the semifinals, and the Trojans lost 81-74 in the finale.

Before the tournament rolls around, the No. 12-4A Tigers will be hoping to add another loss to the Trojans’ record. They’ll need big performances from Morgan Hill and Jade Hill, who have combined to average 42.8 points per game.
