Mountain Iron-Buhl

vs. Maranatha

3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3

Mountain Iron-Buhl has defeated Maranatha Christian Academy in three of their five meetings since the 2012-13 season.

The Mustangs will be looking to even the score when they hosts the Rangers on Saturday.

But there's a new twist to this matchup: Maranatha, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A by Minnesota Basketball News, made the jump from Class 1A this season, so these state tournament mainstays won't see each other in a title game rematch.

So far, the move up has been kind to the Mustangs (12-3, 7-0), who've won seven of their last eight games. Last Friday, Maranatha picked apart New Life Academy 85-35 as Breianna Smestad recorded 20 points.

She and Jaclyn Jarnot could be keys to a victory over Mountain Iron-Buhl this year. Jarnot had a team-best 20 points in last season's 97-82 loss to the Rangers, who got a game-high 27 points from Allie Negen.

While Negen (13.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg) looks to have a repeat performance, Mary Burke (26.8 ppg, 10.2 rpg) is the catalyst for the Rangers (18-1, 2-0) offense this year. Burke, who is fourth in the state in points per game, steered No. 2-1A Mountain Iron-Buhl to a 76-47 victory at Deer River on Jan. 25 with a game-high 33 points.
