Goodhue needed a spark. It had the perfect player to provide it in 5-5 Mckenzie Ryan.

The senior guard made four three-pointers en route to a 14-point performance as No. 2-ranked Goodhue pulled away from Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther for a 68-55 triumph in the Class 1A quarterfinals Thursday at Mariucci Arena. The Wildcats (26-4) are the defending state champions.

Her two three-pointers toward the end of the first half, and another shortly after the intermission, helped the Wildcats turn a one-point lead into a 40-26 cushion. She also had another basket during the 17-4 run.

“We needed that spurt,” Goodhue coach Josh Wieme said. “Mckenzie really showed how important she is to our team. She’s a great shooter, composed shooter.”

The Wildcats’ balanced attack was too much for Jaguars over the final 14 minutes. Fellow senior guard Maddy Miller finished with a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the second half. Junior Emily Benrud scored 13 points and junior Sydney Lodermeier added 10.

“We promote all of our kids on the floor to be scorers,” Wieme said. “Emily getting in double figures was huge.”

Senior forward Hanna Geistfeld had 19 points for the Jaguars (26-5).
