Goodhue? Try Great-hue.

The top-seed Wildcats dominated Sacred Heart of East Grand Forks throughout a 77-46 victory in Thursday’s Class 1A state tournament quarterfinal game played at Mariucci Arena.

A 14-1 opening Goodhue run set a tone for both teams.

“We played defense really well, pressured their guards and got in their heads,” said junior forward Maddy Miller, who led the Wildcats with 17 points and seven steals. “I don’t think they were ready for our pressure right away.”

Sacred Heart senior forward Michele Remer concurred. Her team committed 28 turnovers that led to 31 points for Goodhue (28-4).

“We weren’t ready for how aggressive they are,” said Remer, who led the first-time state entrant Eagles (28-2) with 23 points. “Their press kind of surprised us.”

The Wildcats led 47-18 at halftime, creating 16 Eagles’ turnovers. Miller said the strong start was about more than Sacred Heart. Goodhue players, aware of favored teams in other classes that suffered unexpected losses, did not want to become causalities.

“There have been a lot of upsets so we had to come out strong,” she said.
