Minnehaha Academy coach Josh Thurow got the news and couldn’t help but laugh.

His leading scorer, Sarah Kaminski, spent Tuesday night sick to her stomach. She was able to play Wednesday, but she was far from normal.

Without Kaminski’s scoring, the No. 3-seeded Redhawks fell to unseeded New London-Spicer, losing 70-51 in the Class 2A girls’ quarterfinals at Mariucci Arena.

“I just laugh at the timing,” Thurow said. “Of course, before state. I guess it’s better than sections because we might not have been here.”

Kaminski scored 12 points but went 2-for-17 from the field. Terra Rhoades emerged with 22 points, but against New London-Spicer’s trademark 2-3 zone, it wasn’t nearly enough. The Redhawks shot only 25 percent for the game.

Minnehaha Academy (25-4) moved to a press in the second half and got within three points of tying the game, but New London Spicer’s defense held strong.

“Our girls were just gassed … we just didn’t have enough to push over the top,” Thurow said.

Megan Thorson led New London-Spicer (24-6) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Oman Shea scored 13.

“We had several stretches where we got a little crazy with the basketball,” Wildcats coach Mike Drier said, “but we played good enough defense to make up for it.”
