The Mainstreeters came out running, and Madison Greenwaldt came out gunning.

From the start, it was clear: This one was going to be a blowout.

It was, 70-51.

Greenwaldt finished with 21 points as Sauk Centre beat Norwood Young America.

“There’s been games where we can’t hit anything, we’ve got to rely on our defense to win games,” Sauk Centre coach Scott Bergman said. “And there’s games like tonight where Madi has the potential to go off like she did.”

Sauk Centre built a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the game, and the shots only kept falling. The Mainstreeters (30-1) led by as many as 28 and finished the first half with nine three-pointers, while Greenwaldt made five of her first six.

Norwood Young America (26-4) narrowed the deficit to as little as 13 in the second half, but the game never felt close. Bren Fox led the Raiders with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Although all of Greenwaldt’s 21 points came in the first half, she still was the game’s top scorer. Maesyn Thiesen added 14 and Jill Klaphake and Kelsey Peschel each scored 10 for Sauk Centre.

“It was crazy,” Greenwaldt said. “I wasn’t expecting to come out and make that many. They were going in, so I just kept shooting.”
