Good teams find ways to win. Even when they find themselves in an early hole.

“Second half we played pretty well,” Ada-Borup coach David Smart said. “First half, turned the ball over too many times. … Inexplicable turnovers.”

No. 2 seed Ada-Borup kept its undefeated record unblemished, moving to 30-0 with a 71-53 win over Springfield (24-5) in the Class 1A quarterfinal Thursday at Mariucci Arena. The Cougars are looking for their first title since 2009.

Ada-Borup struggled early, with turnovers on its first two possessions. Springfield took advantage, using its range from beyond the arc to go up 18-11. The Tigers held the lead for the first part of the first half. Then Ada-Borup found its groove with a 16-0 run to grab the lead it wouldn’t give back.

As the Cougars tried to take control of the fast-paced game, the Tigers kept up the rest of the half and hit a short jumper just before the buzzer. Ada-Borup went into the locker room with a slim 38-33 lead.

The halftime discussion for the Cougars? Turnovers, of course.

“It was definitely a point of contention,” Smart said.

Their troubles quickly disappeared. Ada-Borup opened the second half with a 17-6 run. Senior Miki Lee led the scoring for the Cougars, with 21 points. She was also 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Junior Morgan Miller had 15 of her own points and was also perfect from the line.

Ada-Borup shot 57.1 percent for the game.

“We also did a nice job on the boards,” Smart said. Ada-Borup grabbed 34 rebounds compared to 16 for Springfield.

Sophomore Vishe Rabb led the scoring for Springfield with 24 points and six rebounds. Senior Joeli Arnoldi added 12 points, five assists and three steals.

It may be the seventh state tournament appearance for Ada-Borup, but that doesn’t mean everyone is used to the big stage. They only have one starter returning from last year, Smart said.

“A lot of new kids,” he said.

He added that they might have felt a little pressure after last year, when Ada-Borup was bounced in the state quarterfinals. They were the runner-up in 2013.

Ada-Borup is looking for a perfect season. New Richland-H-E-G did it last year, going 31-0 to win a Class 2A title.
